The Order of the Swan is the order chain of German spiritual knighthood of the princes and nobles of the late 15th century, ruled by the house of Hohenzollern.
Each of the links depicted a heart clutched in a medieval torture device - two opposing saws. The heart chain symbolized true repentance, confession, redemption, and punishment. Within the charter of the Order, the swan meant purity of heart and at the same time it reminded of death. Also, according to the Statutes of 1484, the unconquered swan was the symbol of a free bird. It was also a reminder that the founders of the Order ran it as a free and noble people. The Order itself was founded on September 29, 1440 by Elector Friedrich II of Brandenburg.
The Order of the Swan collar is depicted on many paintings, including "Portrait of a Lady wearing the Order of the Swan" ca. 1490, that is stored in Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid.
Collar consists of Medallion of Our Lady, Swan pendant, divider and 15 links. The chain is about 1 meter long. Brass cast.
