The Order of Saint Michael collar. Brass cast, cold enamel. History: The Order of Saint Michael was a French chivalric order, founded by Louis XI of France on 1 August 1469, in response to the Burgundian Order of the Golden Fleece. The Saint Michael's Order goal was to confirm loyalty of the French knights to the king. This order was the highest one in France until it was superseded by the Order of the Holy Spirit in XVI century. The Order of Saint Michael was dedicated to the Archangel Michael. A gold badge with the image of the saint was included for every member. On the image Saint Michael was standing on a rock (Mont Saint-Michel) in combat with the serpent. The collar is made of golden scallop shells (the symbol of pilgrimage to St. Michael's tomb in Santiago de Compostela) linked with double knots. Length of the chain is about 1 meter. Collar in the photo is gold plated.
