A pilgrim's badge relating to the cult of St. Thomas Becket, patron saint of politicians. The badge depicts the sword from which the saint died.
Thomas Becket, St. Thomas of Canterbury is also known as Thomas of London. Becket was described by his contemporaries as intelligent, charming, and authoritative. He was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1162 until his assassination in 1170. He is revered as a saint and martyr by both the Catholic Church and the Anglican community. Thomas Beckett came into conflict with Henry II, King of England, over the rights and privileges of the Church, and was murdered by the King's followers in Canterbury Cathedral. His head was hacked off with a sword. Soon after his death he was canonized by Pope Alexander III. The people of London accepted him as co-patron saint of London with St. Paul: both their images appeared on the seals of the city and of the Lord Mayor.
England, London, late XIV century. Based on the book "Pilgrim souvenirs and Secular badges" by Brian Spencer.
