Tell about this item to your friends:

Indecent badge, depicting a pilgrim in traditional clothing. It's double-sided - one side decent, the other indecent (on the reverse side he shows genitals).
This badge could have been a satire on male and female pilgrims whose real goal was erotic adventure. And this is not some fiction, but is described in J. Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Besides, there were peculiar "professional pilgrims" who made pilgrimages for money instead of others and traded fake relics. Such were the characters of the knave's fables with pilgrims - including those with erotic overtones. 1300-1350, Netherlands.
The badge is sewn on by the staff and can be turned one side or the other. Based on Jos Kolderweij, "Sieraad en devotie in middeleews vlaandreen".
Brass cast. Size 52 x 28 mm.
